This collection contains quarterly returns of prisoners held in prisons, asylums and convict hulks across England and Wales, between the years 1824 and 1876. These returns were registered at regular intervals to record the individuals confined in each institution. Records typically include the name of the prisoner, the year of birth, the name and place of the prison, the place and date of conviction, and the date on which the return was registered. Zephaniah Williams was a Welsh Chartist leader and self-taught geologist, one of three commanders of the Newport Rising of 1839, the last armed insurrection on British soil. He helped lead thousands of workers in a march on Newport demanding democratic rights, was convicted of high treason and initially sentenced to death before being transported for life to Tasmania. Remarkably, he discovered coal on the island, built a considerable fortune in exile, and died a free man in Launceston in 1874.
